A wonderfully characterful handmade clay dragon from Uzbekistan, modelled in the tradition of Central Asian folk pottery.
The dragon has an exaggerated open mouth, curved horn and a wonderfully elaborate curling body and tail. Its surface is decorated throughout with hand-worked circular and linear motifs, while the warm natural clay has been left largely uncoloured, allowing the modelling and texture to stand out.
Uzbekistan has a long tradition of producing small clay animals and fantastic creatures, including dragons. Many were traditionally made as khushtak whistles, although not every decorative clay figure functions as a whistle and this example is therefore being sold simply as a figurine.
