A large hand-carved and hand-painted wooden bowl from Zimbabwe, decorated with a detailed African wildlife scene.
At the centre is a hand-painted map of Africa, with individual countries named and picked out in rich earthy colours. Surrounding the map are elephants, giraffes and zebras, with a patterned border framing the entire design. The natural grain of the wood remains beautifully visible throughout.
Bowls of this type are both decorative and practical, traditionally used in the home for fruit and similar purposes as well as being displayed for their carved and painted decoration.
