A striking pair of vintage Chinese Foo Dog guardian lions, intricately carved from solid grey and white jade and mounted on substantial cylindrical jade bases.
Each guardian lion is beautifully detailed, with expressive features, curled manes, raised tails and traditional carved decoration. The natural jade displays attractive variations of grey, white and soft green tones throughout the stone, making each figure individually distinctive.
These are particularly substantial pieces for their size, with the characteristic cold, dense weight of solid jade. Traditionally displayed as a pair, Chinese guardian lions are longstanding symbols of protection and guardianship.
Believed to date from the mid-20th century, approximately 1950s–1970s.
