A lovely set of three small vintage pill or trinket boxes, each constructed with warm-toned bone panels set within brass surrounds.
The set comprises three different shapes — round, square and hexagonal — with removable lids. Each lid is decorated with individually fitted geometric bone sections arranged in a radiating pattern, while narrow rectangular bone panels continue around the sides. The interiors are finished in brass.
The natural variation in the bone gives each box its own mixture of cream, honey and deeper russet tones. There is visible age-related wear, tarnishing and surface marking throughout, giving the set plenty of character.
I’ve researched these and they fit the type of Indian bone-and-brass boxes produced during the later 20th century. I wouldn’t try to give them a tighter date without a maker’s mark or provenance. Comparable Indian bone-and-brass boxes are generally modestly valued: a 14.5cm example sold at UK auction for £12, while smaller examples sell around the £8–£15 mark individually.
