Vintage 1970s Chinese Calligraphy Writing Set – Unused & Complete

Believed to date from the 1970s, this wonderfully complete Chinese calligraphy writing set has survived unused in its original fitted presentation case, together with its original illustrated instruction sheet.

Opening the green patterned case reveals a vivid red fitted interior containing the traditional tools of Chinese brush writing and illustration. Two bamboo-handled calligraphy brushes sit alongside a carved black inkstone, an ornate solid ink stick decorated with a striking gilt dragon, a blue-and-white dragon-decorated porcelain piece, red seal paste and a pale carved stone seal or chop ready for personalisation.

The surviving original paperwork is particularly lovely, explaining how the different pieces are used and identifying the brushes as being made from goat’s-tail hair. The set itself has never been used, leaving the brushes and writing implements beautifully preserved.

The presentation case is covered in patterned green fabric with traditional-style toggle fastenings, a rich red interior and an unusual padded cream fabric panel fitted inside the lid.
