A striking Chinese lacquered jewellery box, personally purchased from Cat Street Market, Hong Kong, in 1998 and never used.
Finished in glossy black with rich red decoration, the box features a traditionally dressed figure on the lid, with intricate birds, bamboo, floral and scrolling motifs continuing around the sides.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a large mirror and vivid scarlet fitted interior, with separate jewellery compartments, padded ring rolls and a decorative textile panel. A full-width lower drawer provides additional storage, finished with ornate gold-tone fittings.
A particularly attractive example, preserved in excellent unused condition for almost three decades.
