Vintage Heavy Resin Foo Dog Guardian Lion with Brocade Ball

A wonderfully imposing vintage Foo Dog, or Chinese guardian lion, cast in substantial, unusually heavy resin with a rich dark brown, almost bronze-like finish.

Crouched protectively over a traditional decorated brocade ball, this characterful guardian has a wonderfully fierce expression, with bared teeth, pronounced brows and an elaborate mane formed from deep scrolling curls. One powerful paw grips the ball while the muscular body sweeps backwards into a spectacular raised tail.

The modelling is particularly attractive, with decorative scrollwork continuing across the body and mane, substantial clawed paws and incised floral and geometric detailing across the brocade ball. The deep brown finish catches the raised areas beautifully, emphasising the sculptural detail and giving the piece considerable presence despite its relatively compact size.

Traditionally known in the West as Foo Dogs, these Chinese guardian lions have long been associated with protection, strength and prosperity, making this a striking decorative piece as well as an interesting addition to a collection of Asian-inspired art and curios.
