An extraordinary and highly decorative representation of the legendary Qilin, one of the great auspicious creatures of Chinese mythology.
This striking vintage resin figure depicts the mythical beast seemingly floating amongst the clouds, its scaled body, dragon-like head, flowing mane and powerful hoofed legs picked out in beautifully aged shades of celadon green and ivory. Deep crimson flame-like accents sweep across the body, giving the figure wonderful movement and making the intricate modelling stand out dramatically.
The sculpted cloud base is a delight in itself. Look closely and small symbolic treasures emerge from amongst the swirling clouds, including a peach-like fruit, traditionally associated with longevity, alongside further auspicious objects. Rather than simply standing upon a plinth, the Qilin appears to stride above them, giving the whole piece an almost airborne quality.
There is an enormous amount to discover in this figure: individually modelled scales, curling whiskers, flowing hair, elaborate claws and hooves, scrolling clouds and tiny decorative details. It is precisely the sort of piece that rewards being viewed from every angle.
We have been unable to trace another example of this exact design, making its original maker and date something of a mystery. We therefore make no attribution beyond its identification as a vintage resin Qilin — but it is unquestionably one of the more unusual curios to pass through Morvenna’s Keep.
